LAUDATO SI
Laudato Si'
‘Laudato Si’, the second encyclical of Pope Francis, invites us to protect God's creation for future generations. It asks us to embrace lifestyle changes for our own good as well as to take care of people who are poor and are more vulnerable. Pope Francis calls for all people of the world to take swift and unified global action.
Why do we have a Laudato Si' group?
-To ensure our school is eco-friendly and to prepare children to live with reflection of the environment
-To make sure all children have a voice to raise an issue
-To discuss and raise issues related to the environment
It deals with many environmental issues including:
- pollution
- climate change
- water
- loss of biodiversity
- decline in the quality of human life.
Pope Francis implores us to work together to create a better world for future generations and asks us to make the necessary changes in our lives in order to take care of, respect and value our ‘common home’.
'Let us protect with love all that God has given us!'
Aspull Hedgehogs
Aspull Helping Hedgehogs came into school to deliver an assembly on how to keep hedgehogs safe in the winter. We learnt the exact steps on how to care for one, if we ever came across one who needed our help. Laudato Si did some further work with Tamsin, and have lots of ideas which we are hoping to implement in the New Year. After their visit, the Laudato Si team produced some posters for the children around school.
Recycling Christmas Jumpers
In the spirit of Laudato Si and caring for our common home, we’re inviting you to join us in a simple act of stewardship this festive season. Laudato Si are collecting Christmas jumper donations to help reduce waste, share joy, and look after our world.
This is a wonderful way to reuse and recycle, ensuring every child can take part while we live out the message of caring for creation and each other.
Plastic Assembly
The Laudato Si team led an assembly focused on the importance of recycling plastic and caring for the environment. They explained how reducing waste helps protect God’s creation and encourages everyone to make responsible choices. By sharing clear messages and practical ideas, the team inspired the school community to take action and look after our common home.
After school club - Bug Hotel
The Laudato Si team supported the teachers by helping to run an after-school Bug Hotel Club, encouraging children to learn more about insects and their habitats. They worked alongside staff to build bug hotels and explained why these spaces are important for protecting wildlife. Through this activity, the children were reminded of the message from scripture,
“How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all” (Psalm 104:24),
as they learned to care for even the smallest parts of God’s creation.
Planting at church
The Laudato Si team worked together to plant new flowers and plants in the church grounds, helping to care for and improve this special shared space. Through their hard work, they showed respect for God’s creation and a commitment to looking after the environment. As scripture teaches,
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1),
reminding us that caring for the land is an important part of our faith.
Bird Feeders
The apples harvested from our school orchard were carefully made into bird feeders and placed around the school grounds to support local wildlife. This simple act helped the children understand the importance of caring for all living things and respecting God’s creation. As scripture reminds us,
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them” (Matthew 6:26).
Through this activity, the school community put faith into action
Harvest
The Laudato Si team enjoyed harvesting apples from our school orchard and tomatoes from the allotment, celebrating the fruits of caring for God’s creation. These were proudly presented during assembly as a reminder of the importance of looking after our common home. Inspired by scripture,
“You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing” (Psalm 145:16),
the apples were then used to make bird feeders to help local wildlife, while Mrs Cooper used the tomatoes to make delicious homemade tomato soup. This helped the whole school see how caring for creation can benefit both people and nature.
Welcome Mass
During our school’s Welcome Mass, Father Kevin introduced the new Laudato Si group, encouraging everyone to care for God’s creation and one another. He reminded us of the words from scripture,
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15),
highlighting our responsibility to protect the world God has given us.
Seed bombs
Members of the Laudato Si team enjoyed supporting the children in EYFS as they planted their handmade seed bombs. These special seed bombs were created to help support our local wildlife, especially bees, by growing flowers that provide food and shelter. It was a wonderful opportunity for the younger children to learn about caring for God’s creation in a hands-on way. As it says in the Bible,
“Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit.” (Genesis 1:11)
Together, we are helping nature to thrive.
Allotment
The Laudato Si team have been busy caring for our school allotment by cleaning it up and planting beautiful seasonal flowers. Their hard work helps create a vibrant and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy, while also showing respect for God’s creation. Through their actions, they remind us all of the importance of nurturing the world around us. As the Bible says,
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15)
The big litter pick
The Laudato Si team supported the school by organising a big litter pick around the school grounds and in the local community. Their efforts helped raise important awareness about litter and recycling, encouraging our younger pupils to make cleaner, greener choices every day. By working together to care for our environment, they showed how small actions can make a big difference. As the Bible reminds us,
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” (Psalm 24:1)
Let’s continue to protect and cherish our world!
Laudato Si tackling consumerism
Our Laudato Si group have a mission to tackle consumerism. They worked increcinly hard to arrange for a book swap using pre-loved books from our school community for World Book Day.
"When we feel empty inside, we might think that buying lots of things will make us happy. But real happiness comes from love, sharing, and caring for others—not from having more stuff."
Pope Francis
Litter Picking in the community
The Laudato Si team took the lead in organising a community litter pick to help keep our local area clean and beautiful. Their hard work showed how much we can all do to care for God’s creation and make our environment a better place for everyone. By coming together to protect the earth, they lived out the message that we are all responsible stewards of the world around us. As the Bible says,
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” (Psalm 24:1)
Recycling week
The Laudato Si team worked hard to raise awareness about recycling during our Recycling Week. They led a very informative assembly that helped everyone understand the importance of caring for our planet by reducing waste and recycling properly. The children learned valuable ways to make a difference and were inspired to take action in their homes and around the school. As Pope Francis reminds us,
“The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”
Let’s all do our part to protect and cherish God’s creation!
