RE CURRICULUM
Step into RE at Holy Family...
“Train up a child in the way that he should go; when he is old he will not depart from it.”
–Proverbs 22:6
What does RE look like at Holy Family...
At Holy Family, we warmly invite each child to embark on a personal and meaningful journey with Christ. Our mission is to nurture the faith of every child, helping them to develop a deep and lasting relationship with God while discovering and embracing the unique gifts and talents He has lovingly given them. We cherish and celebrate each child’s natural capacity for awe, wonder, reverence, and spirituality.
Our teaching and faith life are rooted in the ‘Lighting the Path’ and the Salford Diocesan scheme of work, designed for Early Years and Key Stages 1 and 2. This curriculum, endorsed by the Diocese, is now evolving in line with the new Religious Education Directory: To Know You More Clearly (2023). This Directory places the person of Jesus Christ at the centre of all learning, ensuring that our children are formed not only in knowledge of the faith, but also in love of Christ and commitment to living as His disciples.
In addition, the prayer life of our school is enriched by the guidance of the new Prayer and Liturgy Directory (2023), which deepens our understanding of worship and strengthens our commitment to celebrating the mysteries of our faith in ways that are joyful, reverent, and age-appropriate.
From Early Years to Year 6, every class journeys through the teachings of the Catholic Church, following the Liturgical Calendar. The content of study is carefully matched to age and stage of development:
Children participate in a rich variety of opportunities to celebrate and live out their faith, including:
- Preparing and leading Masses and liturgies both in school and at parish level.
- Weekly classroom Celebration of the Word linked to Scripture and Gospel values.
- Close collaboration with our parish community, building strong links between home, school, and parish.
- Involvement in charitable outreach and service, both locally and globally.
At Holy Family, Catholic Social Teaching forms a cornerstone of our mission. Through the Caritas in Action programme, children learn about the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching—human dignity, community and participation, solidarity, rights and responsibilities, stewardship of creation, the option for the poor and vulnerable, and the dignity of work. These principles help our pupils to see faith as something lived and active, shaping their choices and inspiring them to make a positive difference in the world.
This work strengthens our SMSC provision and complements our PSHE curriculum, helping pupils to grow into compassionate, thoughtful, and responsible young people. We are proud that our children are not only taught the values of the Gospel but are also encouraged to live them daily, putting their faith into action in service to others.
As part of our commitment to British Values, we teach respect for all people and explore other world faiths, including Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. This helps our children to grow in understanding, compassion, and a desire for peace in our diverse world.
At Holy Family, Religious Education is more than a subject – it is the foundation of everything we do, shaping children who are thoughtful, compassionate, and rooted in Christ.
